Combustion systems oxidize fossil fuels into CO2, H20, light and heat. Some of the emissions they produce are nitrogen oxide (NO) and carbon monoxide (CO). A combustion system generally consists of an ignition source, burner, safety valves, flame monitor and fuel/air controls. A well-designed combustion system safely produces usable heat by burning fuels efficiently.
Custom Thermal Applications is a leading Canadian provider of custom engineered combustion systems for industrial process applications and meets the process combustion needs of manufacturing, food processing, bakery, cooking, and metal treatment facilities. Our cutting-edge technology and innovative designs ensure reliable, safe, and low-maintenance systems that operate at max-efficiency.
Industrial Combustion Services
Many industries rely on combustion systems and services to operate efficiently. The applications we focus on at Custom Thermal include:
Air Heating
Air Heating is used in drying, baking, paint curing and aging metals. Commonly used in continuous processes using conveyors and in batch processes. The heated air is generally circulated around products using fans or blowers. In some applications, such as baking, conveyors will be heated directly which then heat the product and the air in the oven. Printing presses use specialized air heating systems to dry ink, at speeds up to 1000 feet per minute. Sophisticated controls enable efficient systems.
Solution Heating
Water, water-based solutions, and oils are heated to a range of temperatures for a variety of processes. Water can be heated to around 100 deg.C for mixing ingredients, washing during a process or daily plant cleaning in food industries. Heated water-based solutions can be used for metal cleaning and preparation prior to painting. Hot oils are used for cooking, tank heating and applications using heat exchangers to 235 deg.C. Water is also heated and converted to steam for transferring heat to processes. Water can be heated indirectly, as in a boiler or tank, and can be heated directly, as in a direct contact water heater or submerged combustion. Direct contact water heating is the most effective way of heating water.
Direct Heating
Many processes use direct flame impingement. Metal heat treating, brazing or soldering, plastics, aluminum extrusion and paint stripping are but a few.
Here is a comprehensive list of the industries we serve that utilize the applications listed above:
- Beverage, Bottling, and Canning
- Baking
- Car, Truck, and Tank Washing
- Foundries
- Chemicals
- Commercial Laundry
- Concrete Mix
- Dairy and Food Processing
- Hospitals and Pharmaceuticals
- Metal Processing
- Painting and Coating

Benefits and Capabilities
When a combustion system is operating at maximum efficiency, it reduces energy costs and its carbon footprint. Combustion systems require routine maintenance checks to extend its lifetime and ensure it is working at maximum efficiency. If your combustion systems are not operating efficiently despite routine checks, it may be time to upgrade.
At Custom Thermal Applications, our products are from leading manufacturers with proven track records for in-field performance. Our industrial equipment catalog includes high energy/high voltage gas igniters, high-efficiency burners, modular valve train components, and intelligent flame scanners.
Our modern PLC-based control systems optimize air and fuel ratios for consistent performance and efficiency. Not to mention, our highly talented staff of combustion engineers can integrate the latest combustion technology into many existing systems. We have plentiful experience preparing documentation and equipment for ESA and TSSA approvals to facilitate the process of your combustion system.
